Nokia offers value investors an opportunity to earn north of a 4% dividend yield while the company seeks to reinvent itself. Still holding a leading market share in phone sales, Nokia’s valuation, low expectations and dividend yield certainly are tempting. The company has successfully reinvented itself in the past but can it do so again given the extreme industry pressures from Apple, Google, HTC, and Motorola to name a few?

Many times Wall Street over-reacts to short term profit reports and misses the forest for the trees. This is the case on Cisco’s earnings reports. Despite the slowdown on the public business due to tough economic conditions in this space, the company delivered some impressive results within many of their other divisions.
Nuance Communications Follow-up

Nuance had come close to my price target of $22 but now has traded back down to $19 today on what is being perceived as a disappointing first quarter 2011 earnings report. This is fairly typical in Nuance’s trading pattern to trade down after earnings.

Although the financial markets are still awaiting a few recognizable earnings reports, the fourth quarter 2010 earnings season is virtually complete. The results have been impressive as the resounding majority of reporting public companies had better than expected results and encouraging outlooks as we head into 2011.

As investors, we have learned over the years to expect the unexpected when participating in the financial markets. The market recovery that began in late March of 2009 can certainly be classified as unexpected given the continued problems that the world economies are facing. Investors often forget that the financial markets are forward-looking and not as focused on the past.
